About Terence Mix:

Author Terence Mix graduated from the University of Southern California and Hastings College of Law in San Francisco. A member of the California State Bar since January 4, 1967, he has spent most of his 40-plus years in practice engaged in the subspecialty of drug product liability, litigating against many of the major pharmaceutical companies in the United States. In addition to prosecuting eight Clomid lawsuits, he has battled manufacturers of diethylstilbestrol (DES), oral contraceptives, progestins, L-tryptophan, phisoHex, and a number of other pharmaceutical drugs and products, including medical devices. His experience includes numerous trials, dozens of inspection trips to pharmaceutical plants, and the review of hundreds of thousands of medical and scientific documents maintained by corporate defendants.

After his ground-breaking verdict against the manufacturer of Clomid in 1974, the author was invited by the FDA to testify in front of its Obstetrics and Gynecology Advisory Committee. At the hearing he presented his theory on how Clomid and other fertility drugs were causing abnormal chromosomes in the human embryo – a theory that became known at the FDA as the “Mix Hypothesis.”

Between 1977 and 1979, the author spent 18 months conducting his own study from records produced by the manufacturer of Clomid related to its pre-market clinical investigations of the drug. Convinced that they validated the Mix Hypothesis, he promptly forwarded the results to the FDA, demanding that it order the manufacturer to include appropriate warnings in its package insert on the drug. In 1981, largely because of the multiple efforts of the author, the FDA ordered the drug company to include warnings about the risk of birth defects in its Clomid package insert — a mandate that has been ignored by the company to this date.

In 1981, Terence Mix was elected president of what is now the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles and for 12 years sat on the Board of Governors of the California Trial Lawyers Association (now Consumer Attorneys of California). He has lectured and written extensively on litigation techniques and strategies, including the prosecution and trial of drug product cases. A former biographee in Who’s Who in California (1983) and Who’s Who in American Law (1985), he has also published a work of fiction, A Question of Judgment, Bantam, 1985.

During the course of writing The Price of Ovulation, Terence Mix reviewed in excess of 1000 scientific papers on the subject of fertility drugs and birth defects.
